"Love & Basketball but with Songs"
My Movie Grading: B+
Despite the fact that this movie was slightly cliche it was actually really good! Nate Parker and Gugu Mbatha Raw put on such a stellar performance as Noni and Kaz that I surprisingly didn't get bored at all or lose interest. I haven't seen Belle yet but heard the Gugu's performance in that made her a top contender for this role. I think it was a perfect fit. She has a likeness factor to her that was very pleasant and soothing. Though her character had personal struggles - the beauty behind those are what made this story come together. I actually found myself loving the film as much as I loved "Love & Basketball". The ups and downs that Noni & Kaz have reminded me of any love relationship between a young girl and boy. They love each other then they break up, they love each other again and then they break up again but in the end - They love each other. Definitely one of my favorites this year so far and I plan to purchase on DVD. If you haven't seen it yet - go see it. Gina Prince-Bythewood wrote and directed the hell out of this film - support her :)
That's my take,
