"Lost Concepts - Make this Scary" My Movie Rating - D- Let me pose a question first...What would you think this movie is about based off the poster? Ok...Now totally lose whatever pre-concieved notions you had about this film because it's not at all what you would think. Mama was full of potential from the beginning starting with the opening scenes but we soon see that it is going down the movie rabbit hole into the world of good ideas but bad delivery! The film deals with the story of two young girls abandoned in a forest cabin, eventually "Mothered" by an unknown dis formed entity that they fondly call "Mama", which eventually follows them to their new suburban home after their uncle retrieves them. Again, I had high hopes that this movie would be really scary but by the end I felt angry that I had wasted $12 of hard earned money on a total waste of time. The story lost the meaning of scary midway thru and ends on a confusing note. After a tearful farewell, Mama and Lilly (one of the children) leap off a cliff, turning into a large group of moths when they hit the branch that originally killed Mama and her baby almost a century before. The film ends with Annabel (the goth girlfriend) and Lucas (the uncle) embracing Victoria (the older child), and Victoria noticing a moth with bright blue wings (as opposed to Mama's moths, which were all dark) landing on her hand, indicating that is Lilly incarnated and is still with her in some form. This ending really annoyed me because you always know a movie is going left when a character or two burst into moths -____-. This was the final scene and it took all of me not to throw my drink at the screen. Unless you are extremely bored on a Saturday - I wouldn't waste my time. That's my take, L. |
